California Service Learning Leader Schools Award

In November 2008 Valley View submitted an application for the California Service Learning Leader Schools Award.  On February 10, 2009 Valley View was honored at the annual Service Learning Leadership Institute in Anaheim as State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell named Valley View Elementary as a recipient of the Service Learning Leader Schools Award.  We were selected because we have excellent service learning programs that help students integrate what they learn in class and apply it in ways that benefit our community.  In order to qualify for the award, California schools not only had to meet their Academic Performance Index growth targets for the past two years, but they also had to use service learning as a school-wide instructional method.  Applicants were evaluated and scored by teams of school district staff under the supervision of the California Department of Education.  Of the 11 schools named, RUSD is the only district in the state to receive two awards (Valley View and Rocklin Elementary).

Service Learning is an instructional strategy where students learn academic content standards by participating in organized service that addresses community need and fosters civic responsibility.  Service Learning goes beyond Community Service as it connects the student to learning and is focused on a community need.  Rocklin Schools do an excellent job with implementing Service learning as an integral part of the our curricula. Rocklin students aim to serve others both locally and world wide.
